Old Westbury Gardens, listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, is the former home of John S.
Phipps, his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps and their four children.
Built by the English designer George A. Crawley between 1904 and
1906, the home is a magnificent Charles II-style mansion featuring
66 rooms, and is nestled amid 200 acres of formal gardens,
landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes. The garden is well
proportioned and well detailed, inspired by a range of features from
English gardens together with some from France and Holland. Grounds
include sweeping lawns, grand allées and wooded trails with over 100
varieties of trees, meadows, lakes, fountains and statuary, a
charming thatched cottage, a primrose path, rose garden, lilac path,
boxwood garden, demonstration gardens, and a 2 ½ acre walled garden
set into the woods. Westbury House is furnished with fine English
antiques and decorative arts from the more than fifty years of the
family's residence.
